Limiting Browser Extensions on Chrome and Edge: What You Need to Know
Overview To strengthen the security of our systems, Teach First is limiting which browser extensions can be installed on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This article explains the new policy, what it means for you, and how you can request an extension to be added to the allow list. Why Are We Limiting Extensions? While extensions can be useful for productivity, they can also introduce security vulnerabilities. Some extensions have access to sensitive data and, if compromised, pose a risk to our organisation. To safeguard our data and systems, we are limiting the number of extensions installed. Review of Installed Extensions During our review, we identified over 300 extensions installed across Teach First, most of which were only installed on one device. Given the large number of extensions, we were unable to individually vet every single one. However, extensions that are directly related to work tasks or improve accessibility have been thoroughly reviewed and added to our approved list. Allowed Extensions List Below is the list of extensions that have been vetted and approved for use within the organisation: Adblock Adblock Plus Adobe Acrobat BlockSite Cisco Webex Extension ColorZilla Dashlane axe DevTools - Web Accessibility Testing Dragon Web Extension Gemalto Web Signer for Barclays Glimpse GoFullPage Google Scholar Google Translate Grammarly IE Tab Jira Product Discovery Keywords Everywhere Loom Mendeley Microsoft 365 Microsoft Editor Microsoft Power Automate Office – Enable Copy & Paste OneNote Web Clipper PassHub.net ProctorExam Read Aloud Salesforce Inspector Reloaded (For sysadmins and dlgadmins only) Screen Recorder Screencastify Scribe Tag Assistant Companion uBlock Origin uniFLOW Vimeo Record WAVE Evaluation Tool Web Developer Web Disability Simulator Week Plan WhatFont Word Online Zoom Zotero How to Request an Extension If you rely on an extension that is not on the allow list, you can submit a request to have it added: Visit the Extension Request Page. Provide the name of the extension, the URL (link to the extension), and a brief explanation of how it will benefit your work. Our IT team will review your request, and if the extension is found to be secure and useful, it will be added to the allow list. Need More Information?
