Limiting Browser Extensions on Chrome and Edge: What You Need to Know
Overview
To strengthen the security of our systems, Teach First is limiting which browser extensions can be installed on Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This article explains the new policy, what it means for you, and how you can request an extension to be added to the allow list.
Why Are We Limiting Extensions?
While extensions can be useful for productivity, they can also introduce security vulnerabilities. Some extensions have access to sensitive data and, if compromised, pose a risk to our organisation. To safeguard our data and systems, we are limiting the number of extensions installed.
Review of Installed Extensions
During our review, we identified over 300 extensions installed across Teach First, most of which were only installed on one device. Given the large number of extensions, we were unable to individually vet every single one. However, extensions that are directly related to work tasks or improve accessibility have been thoroughly reviewed and added to our approved list.

How to Request an Extension
If you rely on an extension that is not on the allow list, you can submit a request to have it added:
- Visit the Extension Request Page.
- Provide the name of the extension, the URL (link to the extension), and a brief explanation of how it will benefit your work.
Our IT team will review your request, and if the extension is found to be secure and useful, it will be added to the allow list.
